Candidate Q&A

1. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FEW PRIORITIES IF ELECTED?
Amy Sabol
The city needs to revitalize neighborhoods and shopping centers. We only have 2% of our land remaining to develop in our locked in 10 square miles. Our city is ideally located in the center of the metroplex. It is apparent we need an attraction/destination to draw people to us. If achieved our city will become more attractive to retail, business and new homeowners. We must be patient and attract quality development, attend to our zoning and ordinances and improve our city.
Don Coates
2. WHY ARE YOU THE BEST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE?
Amy Sabol
Twenty seven years ago, my husband chose Bedford and have remained in Bedford. We owned a business in Bedford which we have since sold. I have long term knowledge of the city and all of its issues. Before joining council I served on two commissions, Community Affairs and Building & Standards. I was involved and actively watching council for 4 years before running. I serve as liaison to the Cultural Commission and have recently with the help of others from Hurst, Euless and Bedford started a 501(c)3 for the arts in HEB, Arts DFW. I am educated on budget, Bedford Boy's Ranch planning, code of ordinances and I listen to the citizens. I have a vision for our city.

3. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE FAIREST WAY TO BALANCE THE TAX BURDEN IN YOUR COMMUNITY BETWEEN RESIDENTS, PROPERTY OWNERS, SMALL BUSINESSES, AND LARGER EMPLOYERS?
Amy Sabol
Our property taxes are uniformly set for the city at large. The city has incentivized business to improve their properties and locate to our city but only by reducing their sales tax obligation or reducing their permitting fees. They must meet stringent parameters to receive the benefit. As the desirability of our city improves the less we will incentivize. Large business have acceptable/legal practices to decrease their taxes, Seniors do receive an property tax exemption. A balance is hard to obtain.
Don Coates
4. PROPERTY TAXES ARE THE LARGEST SOURCE OF FUNDING FOR LOCAL SERVICES. THE STATE LEGISLATURE MAY LIMIT PROPERTY TAX REVENUE GROWTH AT 2.5 PERCENT PER YEAR. IF THIS BECOMES LAW, HOW SHOULD THE CITY COUNCIL ADDRESS THIS?
Amy Sabol
If the state limits property tax revenue at 2.5% our city will have no choice but to layoff employees and cut services. This cap has been estimated to effect our budget by nearly $300,000 the first year (2020). It will also cause a decrease in our city's reserve nearly $500,000. Each and every year after the first year the cost to our city will double forcing more layoffs and service cuts. Frankly, it will devastate many municipalities and we are not alone.
