Job description The nine-member Texas Supreme Court is the highest court for civil (not criminal) cases in the state. Term is six years.
Duties Reviews decisions on civil and juvenile cases appealed from lower courts. The court may also decide not to review cases.
The court has administrative control over the State Bar of Texas and is the sole authority for licensing attorneys in Texas.
Note: civil law deals with behavior that injures an individual or other private party, such as a corporation. Examples include libel, breach of contract, property damage, and negligence resulting in injury or death.
