The Ethics of Speaking Out
August 4 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm CDT
Public Relations Society of America (Fort Worth): A recent national study found that the social media messages actor Tom Hanks posted about his coronavirus experience affected the attitudes and behaviors of millions of people. In a digital world in which all kinds of people – especially famous athletes and entertainers like Hanks – can use their platforms to speak out and advocate for causes and products, what’s left to public relations professionals and journalists? When audiences think celebrities’ status means they’re authorities and experts on public issues, what is there for an official spokesperson to do?
TCU Bob Schieffer College of Communication Dean Kristie Bunton will draw on her new book, Having Their Say: Athletes and Entertainers and the Ethics of Speaking Out, to present ethical responsibilities of famous people, public relations professionals, journalists – and the rest of us – for speaking out about public issues in our own spheres of influence.
