The fact that we have a campaign with various candidates for the Castleberry ISD School Board is exciting! It allows for community voice, vote, and contribution to the selection of the school board member instead having a one candidate, uncontested election. When you are elected by the people, you have to know how to ask good questions, listen with intent to learn from, and hold yourself accountable in all areas of the role – including being an advocate of community needs. I believe that my natural dispositions related to leadership, empathy, and listening balanced with my drive to offer and encourage the best for all our students would certainly make a positive impact on the quality of education, and the educational experience – might I add – for all students. |

We have advanced in technology for our kids far beyond most school districts and recently updated our middle school to better serve our students. The campus that lacks behind in serving our kids is the high school. We are currently looking into options to solve that problem as soon as possible. |

| Ariela Martinez Important issues that face our district follow common national trends for school districts similar to ours: 1) the need for more resources to support students, 2) the disparity and challenge of advancing high-achieving students while equitably serving students who need more individualized and intentional supports, and 3) staff retention. I would address these issues by remaining connected and informed of best-practices and by considering innovative approaches that would allow us to strengthen and enhance our school district. It’s important to consider additional needs that have come from the pandemic. Attendance, engagement, and enrollment are at stake. There are larger disparities after this pandemic year. With COVID, some loses that came are student achievement and attendance. Educational achievement affects educational experience and educational achievement affects school ratings. Also, student attendance affects funding and on top of the appropriations that may be redirected and additional funding that has been lost, we have to ensure that we are anticipating needs that may come. While these issues aren’t exclusive to CISD, our intervention is going to be critical. |

We should continue these partnerships while also reviewing practices and student knowledge and application of evacuation routines, fire drill routines, lock down routines, and inclement weather routines. Ensuring that all students and staff are prepared for any of these situations will help reduce risk, harm, and threat. Unfortunately, unexpected and serious campus crises are becoming more common in our world. While we hope to never face such crises, we’d be amiss to not be well prepared. |

| Dewey Taliaferro We learned there are some children who definitely need the classroom and in person classroom instruction. We have been reminded just how important parents are in the learning process. We were reminded of how much children need structure and repetition around them to focus their learning on new thoughts and ideas. Technology is a very flexible tool for the teachers tool belt and opens up more ways to teach. It is important to continue to use and explore those tools to help our kids learn and excel. |

| Ariela Martinez One aspect we learned of is the value of extracurricular involvement and opportunities to engage and connect: student to student, student to staff, staff to staff, etc. Trends show that students are stressed and needing to be more proactive in exploring outlets to help cope with the increased stress. When they don’t have these outlets and healthy coping strategies, it affects them in the classroom, understandably. Because students have devices and internet access both in-school and at home, I suggest we purchase district wide access to applications that focus on wellness and meditation (like “Calm”) so that students can explore strategies related to wellness and socioemotional learning. It wouldn’t hurt to also provide staff access as well! |

| Ariela Martinez Aside from my response related to stress and mental challenges above, the pandemic has impacted students in nearly all areas. Uncertainly, loss of structure, and constant changes challenged our students. There are also other imperative aspects to consider: some students from lower income families were likely eating less since they relied on free or reduced meals at home. Some students were experiencing major sickness and loss affecting their families and loved ones. Some students living situations changed drastically as their parent’s employment ended or became disrupted. Other students became caretakers for their younger siblings while their parents had to return to work. To offset these impacts the best we can, we have to start with an approach that meets students and families where they are. While we are not the experts in food insecurity or housing loss, an awareness and deep understanding of these challenges allow us to better serve our students. When students are presented with so many challenges, it’s natural for academic challenges to follow suit. |

They worked harder and longer trying to adapt to the unknown of the pandemic. There are not enough ways to show how much they are appreciated. As a society we need to up their monetary value and make them feel supported and treasured. |

| Ariela Martinez On top of similar challenges as the students (sickness, loss of loved ones, and caretaking needs), teachers went extra miles – for their students but also for their families. Teachers inherently care about their students to a point that makes it difficult to not wonder how each student is doing – from those who clearly are struggling more to those who seem to be okay. I often say that while it shouldn’t be this way, teachers never “clock out”. In the evenings and on weekends, I noticed that teachers were often thinking about how to enhance their connection with the students, how to improve their lessons, and how to be their best for their students each and every day. To top it off, teachers were learning online platforms and entirely restructuring their lessons in incredible timing – all to meet the needs of their students. People often forget that the sacrifices that teachers make affect their personal lives. While I hope there is a manageable balance, imagine the teachers who were trying to teach online classes while helping their own young children through online instruction. Imagine the teachers who got burnt out – naturally and understandably. It was often the teachers that students turned to when times got tough. It was the teachers and staff who constantly checked in on students. To say that teachers and staff went the extra mile is an understatement. Teachers and staff were undoubtedly the districts greatest asset. If you didn’t know this already, I hope the pandemic has made it clear for you. How to address better appreciation for teachers and staff, in addition to increased pay, would be a collaboration I look forward to. |

We are the first in Texas to provide free filtered internet to our students in their homes via cell towers. It is a project started 3 years ago and was finished right as the pandemic started. I believe it was Gods perfect timing. We will continually look for new ways to increase opportunities for all of our students. |

| Ariela Martinez Disparities related to access for disadvantaged students or students of color are rooted in larger systemic inequities outside of education. While some many say that disparities are more explicitly focused on tangible access to technology or devices, school board members should have a deeper understanding of the variables that influence, both positively and negatively, these disparities. An often-overlooked aspect of disparities is the value of literacy and capital – and I’m not talking about only reading and money. While providing internet accessibility and a laptop to students are large benefits, the impact is different for a student who struggles with digital literacy and may require help from a parent who also struggles with digital literacy. Many of our student’s parents don’t utilize technology much in their daily work. They are also less likely to review email communication. How are we offsetting our approaches to these disparities? While literacy is often reviewed as the ability to read and comprehend, we cannot forget factors like digital, financial, and cultural literacy as well. When considering capital, there are many areas that disparities for disadvantaged students and students of color lie in: financial capital, social capital, linguistic capital, navigational capital, etc. The list goes on and on and the intersectionality of various factors certainly should be understood by the chosen candidate. |
