Candidate Q&A

1. WHY ARE YOU THE BEST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE?
Brian Conner
Shari DeGeorge
I love the City of Azle, and will work hard to maintain freedom for the citizens of Azle. I am running for City Council to serve the community in which I live. I would like people's individual freedoms to be protected, and government regulation to be minimized. As a board member in our previous neighborhood's HOA I rewrote our bylaws to accommodate new construction in the neighborhood that the developer did NOT build to meet the previous HOA guidelines. We reduced regulations so that major changes were not needed to people's properties. My MBA and business background has prepared me well. I share the same concerns as many other citizens about the recent rapid growth in our city, and what appears to be lack of preparation by the city for that growth.

2. WHAT ARE THE CURRENT NEEDS OF YOUR DISTRICT/AREA AND WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES FOR ADDRESSING THEM?
Brian Conner
Shari DeGeorge
Currently there has been a lot of growth in Azle and it has not appeared that the city has prepared well for the effects of that growth. It also does not appear that the City and the school district have communicated well. These two separate governing agencies do need to coordinate, cooperate, and communicate with one another.

3. THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS AFFECTED THE CITY’S BUDGET AND SERVICES, AS WELL AS THE LIVES OF RESIDENTS. HOW WOULD YOU GRADE YOUR CITY’S RESPONSE AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?
Brian Conner
Shari DeGeorge
The city it seems has simply followed the state, and county mandates. Hind sight is always 20/20 and yes looking back I would have done things differently. Personally I found it very silly that parks were closed for a time. I also found the mask mandate ridiculous. My opinion is to let adults be adults and make decisions that are best for them and their family. If people want to wear masks great no shame in that and if people don't that is great as well, no shame in that either. Maintaining individual rights and freedoms should be a priority.

4. HOW SHOULD THE CITY ADDRESS THE AVAILABILITY OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING? WHAT ROLE SHOULD CITY GOVERNMENT PLAY IN RESPONDING TO PANDEMIC-RELATED EVICTIONS?

5. HOW TO BEST ENSURE PUBLIC SAFETY IS AN IMPORTANT TOPIC. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON BALANCING THE FUNDING AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF BOTH POLICE AND COMMUNITY SERVICES?
Brian Conner
Shari DeGeorge
Services such as public safety, police, fire, city water, roads, etc. need to be prioritized. Petty items that put unnecessary restrictions on citizens, but take city revenue and employees to enforce such as whether or not someone keeps a couple of chickens in their back yard for eggs or whether someone has 2 or 3 garage sales per year, or regulating how many garage sale signs they put up need to be eliminated.
Shari DeGeorge
6. IN THE LAST TERM, WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT VOTE? WHY? HOW DID OR WOULD YOU HAVE VOTED ON THE ISSUE AND WHY?
Brian Conners
Shari DeGeorge
The last term was the presidential election. It was extremely important! I voted for keeping individual rights and freedoms, and less government regulation. My goal in running for Azle City Council is to work to keep this corner of Texas free.
Cameron Alapai
7. DO YOU THINK IT IS EVER APPROPRIATE FOR STATE LAWS TO OVERRIDE LOCAL CONTROL OF ISSUES THAT AFFECT THE CITY? IF SO, PLEASE PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE.
Brian Conner
Shari DeGeorge
If the city, or county overstep, with unreasonable regulation then there should be recourse available for citizens of the that city. If that is an appeal to the state, so be it. For example back in the spring of 2020 when Texas first implemented the state wide mask mandate indoors, there were certain counties in Texas that tried to double down on that and require masks the moment someone stepped out of their front door. Yes I agreed when the Attorney General of Texas told those counties they did not have the authority to overstep in this regard. However I did not agree with the mask mandate from the beginning.

8. THE RECENT “BIG FREEZE” CAUSED MANY RESIDENTS TO GO WITHOUT POWER OR WATER FOR HOURS OR EVEN DAYS. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CITY’S RESPONSE? HOW WOULD YOU WORK TO IMPROVE ELECTRIC/GAS/WATER INFRASTRUCTURE SO THIS NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN?
Brian Conner
Shari DeGeorge
Azle did the best they could given the circumstances. I was very impressed with our city's response.
