Candidate Q&A

1. WHY ARE YOU THE BEST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE?
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
I am a long time resident of Mansfield and have been very involved in the city on many levels. I am a business owner and a Realtor. I have knowledge of how to read plats and plans and understand the development and building process. Working on council this last term, we accomplished so many things but we still have 25% of our land undeveloped and it is imperative how we structure the comprehensive land plan moving forward. I am very invested in this city and have a true heart for our citizens and the future of city.
2. WHAT ARE THE CURRENT NEEDS OF YOUR DISTRICT/AREA AND WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES FOR ADDRESSING THEM?
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
We serve the city as a whole . We are still a growing city so smart growth and infrastructure are very important. Continuing to work on increasing property tax relief and diversifying our tax base is a key issue. My desire has always been for our citizens to have everything they need in the city; Live, Work, Shop and Play. So, adding more shopping, restaurants and entertainment as well as more corporations with career opportunities for our citizens to work where they live, is a principal issue. I will continue to update citizens with a summary of the business addressed after each meeting.
3. THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS AFFECTED THE CITY’S BUDGET AND SERVICES, AS WELL AS THE LIVES OF RESIDENTS. HOW WOULD YOU GRADE YOUR CITY’S RESPONSE AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
I would give Mansfield an A for their response!
4. HOW SHOULD THE CITY ADDRESS THE AVAILABILITY OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING? WHAT ROLE SHOULD CITY GOVERNMENT PLAY IN RESPONDING TO PANDEMIC-RELATED EVICTIONS?
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
While new housing in Mansfield may not be considered affordable housing, there is still a good inventory of existing homes that would be considered affordable. I have had several clients in their early 20's that were able to find homes in their price range in Mansfield.
5. HOW TO BEST ENSURE PUBLIC SAFETY IS AN IMPORTANT TOPIC. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON BALANCING THE FUNDING AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF BOTH POLICE AND COMMUNITY SERVICES?
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
Our police are vetted through an extensive hiring process and also trained in mental health issues, over and above what is required. The safety of our citizens is priority and if we don't have a safe city it won't matter how nice our parks and libraries may be.
6. IN THE LAST TERM, WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT VOTE? WHY? HOW DID OR WOULD YOU HAVE VOTED ON THE ISSUE AND WHY?
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
Providing tax relief for our citizens with a two cent reduction in our tax rate and a 10% homestead exemption. I was 100% a YES for this vote!
7. DO YOU THINK IT IS EVER APPROPRIATE FOR STATE LAWS TO OVERRIDE LOCAL CONTROL OF ISSUES THAT AFFECT THE CITY? IF SO, PLEASE PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE.
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
Only in cases where city leadership may be overreaching. Otherwise, local leaders know what is important to their area.
8. THE RECENT “BIG FREEZE” CAUSED MANY RESIDENTS TO GO WITHOUT POWER OR WATER FOR HOURS OR EVEN DAYS. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CITY’S RESPONSE? HOW WOULD YOU WORK TO IMPROVE ELECTRIC/GAS/WATER INFRASTRUCTURE SO THIS NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN?
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
Mansfield once again stepped up and took care of business. We had a few days of water storage if needed, we opened up warming centers around the city to provide a safe place for residents who were without power and water. Our officers were doing wellness checks on elderly residents and giving rides as needed. The mission brought snacks and drinks to the warming centers Everyone worked together! I would like to see more generators on key city buildings and water/sewer pump stations to make sure we are as independent as possible.
9. ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO ADD?
Christie K. Moore
Julie Short
I have a proven track record or service in this city that goes back many years. From Historical Society President, Historical Landmark Commission, Mansfield Cares Board, Education Foundation Board, Caring Place Clinic Board, and many other community groups and projects, you know what you are getting when you vote Julie Short.
