If I vote FORThe Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD) will be renewed and the city will continue to levy a sales tax of 0.5% to fund it.
If I vote AGAINSTThe CCPD will no longer be funded by a sales tax of 0.5%.
Tax consequencesIf the proposition passes, the sales tax in Watauga will remain the same; if the proposition does not pass, the sales tax will go down by 0.5% and the CCPD will lose its current funding source.
What is a sales and use tax?This is the formal name for a sales tax. Individuals pay sales taxes on most goods and services in Texas.
What is the current sales tax rate?The base rate for the Texas sales tax is 6.25%. However, local government agencies (cities, counties, special purpose districts and transit authorities) can hold elections to increase the sales tax in their area. By law, the maximum sales tax rate (including state and local sales taxes) is 8.25%.

The current sales tax in the city of Watauga is 8.0%, of which 6.25% goes to state government, 0.5% goes to fund the Watauga Crime Control & Prevention District, 0.25% funds the Economic Development Corporation, and 1% goes to the city’s general fund.

What is a Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD)?A CCPD is a special purpose district, which is used to support police programs and services geared toward preventing crime. The CCPD is governed by a board of directors, who are appointed by the city council. The board of directors is required to establish an annual budget, which must be approved by the city council, and the CCPD is required to submit to an independent audit on an annual basis. The CCPD is not a permanent body; voters must re-authorize its continuation.
